My students must put their homework on the right hand side of their desks and copy the journal topic from the board. The topic is usually something I taught the previous day and they must write or draw a picture about it. I allow fifteen minutes for this activity, which gives me time to read notes, take roll, etc. I choose several journal entries as examples of exemplary work and share them with the class."
